Self-deploying structures for satellites

A seemingly modest yet highly innovative material from the metal processing industry could play a key role in shaping the future of space exploration: profiled strip steel. Researchers and engineers are increasingly relying on this flexible yet dimensionally stable material to develop self-deploying structures for satellites. Its use promises not only significant weight savings, but also greater efficiency in transport and the deployment of complex systems in orbit.

By introducing targeted transverse stresses into the strip material, self-unrolling and self-recoiling properties can be achieved—enabling components such as solar sails to deploy without the need for additional actuators. It’s an exciting field in which we remain actively involved.
